New install questions (migration from OTRS 5)

Post by chiel821 »

Hello,

I'm currently using an old version of OTRS (5.0.11) that is running on a Ubuntu server. I want to migrate this to a new server (also running Ubuntu) with Znuny.

Last day I have been trying to do a basic install and I got a couple of questions.

1. I see there is no package provided for Debian/Ubuntu. But there is one for Redhat. So I guess my options are to install from source. Our policy is to try to install as much as possible from packages so that updating machine is relative easy. I did however notice that there is a official "otrs2" package available from Ubuntu which will install Znuny [1]. I tried this packages but you need to do some tweaks to get in running. What are your comments about this package provided by Ubuntu? Is it save/good to use? Or better not? Will there be an official Znuny repo/package for Debian/Ubuntu available in the future?

2. After a clean install from source following the official instruction [2] I started the installer.pl and selected "Create a new database for OTRS" to create a new db. However then the installer complained "Wrong database collation (character_set_database is utf8mb4, but it needs to be utf8)." which is confusing as no db was created yet. So I went one step back, created the db manually, migrated that from utf8mb4 to utf8 and then selected "Use an existing database for OTRS". Is this the correct way? Shouldn't the installer ignore the check for utf8 when you select to create a new database?

3. So I now have a new Znuny install and all looks nice. But I need to migrate all of the data from the old OTRS 5.0.11 server. I tried to search for ways to migrate the data but didn't found any official or clear instructions. What would be the steps to do this migration? Is there any official documentation or other good howto's? Do I have to do any version between these two installation?

Thanks for your help!

Chiel

Hi,

Let me help you a little bit:

1.) The otrs2 package is maintained by Debian and not by Znuny. We do not have a plane to create deb packages on our own, but this can change in the future. The Debian package is not often used by us, because they place many files in other locations than we usually do. This makes sometimes customization more complicated. We recommend for most systems the installation from one of the archive files (.tar.gz, .zip, .tar.bz2)

2.) The installer checks the default server character set and collation, which is used when the database schema is created. But this could be improved for MariaDB/MySQL databases. I'll pass this to development. Anyway, for a migration you don't have to use the installer, just create an empty database with the proper character set and collation.

3.) The original manual describes the update from 5 to 6.0 here: https://doc.znuny.org/doc/manual/admin/ ... ating.html
The new manual covers only the way form 6.0 up to 6.3: https://doc.znuny.org/manual/releases/i ... pdate.html Please note, that every minor migration (6.1, 6.2, ...) needs to be executed.

Great! Thanks for the link to the manual that describes the update from 5 to 6.0! I got it now working on 6.0.40 on a test install all is looking good.

Do you recommend in updating to 6.3? I don't think I need any of the new features.

Seems I do have a reason to upgrade to 6.3 as I'm using Office 365 and need to start using OAuth 2.0 as Basic Auth will be deprecated in the future :)
