Would be good to know what the new archive functionality physically does, does it add a status field or something to articles? Then include an index in the tables, or something like that.

The archive functionality is build in since 3.0 or 3.1
it is adding a flag to the ticket table to prevent that the SQL statements for most of the frontends need to consider all tickets
