Why not using Debian packages?

Post by mkarg »

First of all, thank you for providing OTRS! :-)

We're rather Debian-addicts and wonder why the documentation says we shall not use Debian packages to install from, but instead go the (rather complex) source way. Why that? Is it really risky (like data loss) to use the Debian packages, or do you just like to offer Debian users a way to obtain latest features? If any possible, I'd really like to go with the Debian packages, so I need to know the actual reason for this warning.

Thanks a lot!

age. Any time you use a package, and (in my experience) especially a debian package, you probably can be assured that it works, but it's old.
Also, because of how packaging works, the installation sets itself as the OS wants a package to install. However, that may not be the expected install path you want.

Further, the install by source isn't *that* complicated.

Thanks for the infos. So I installed from source now on Debian Wheezy and it seems all is working. But despite what the installation manual says, there is no script named otrs-scheduler-linux found in the otrs/scripts folder of neither 3.8.8.zip not 3.8.8.tar.gz. Either the manual is wrong about that, or the build bot forgots to add that file to the archives.
