Stuck on web installation

I am on the Database Settings tab of the web installer, and I am getting a:

Error During AJAX communications

error when I try to check database settings

I believe I have the database setup properly, but I am quite new to the Linux environment and MySQL in general.

I have verified my username, password, and hostname, all are correct.

Does anyone have any idea why this error is happening?

The error message really gives no help at all...
