Drop Down Validation

I have set up on my Customer Registration page a drop down menu, and the first option in it is a "Select one of the below options" type option. How can validate this so that upon submitting, the system will check to make sure that is not the option chosen, and if it is, will not allow the account created yet and an error message appears.
