Problem with adding custom field in customer signup

I have searched the forums for this "issue" but could not find it. I am having issues with adding a custom field as described here 3.0 admin manual The issue that arises is when I add the custom field in customerlogin.dtl and I refresh the customer signup page the text box displays: Room{CustomerUser}. I can copy the first name code and have it displayed twice but as soon as I change the display text for that box it adds the {CustomerUser} to the end of the text. Any suggestions or maybe something really simple I'm overlooking.
