Using "too much" swap?

Post by RoyK »

Hi all

Running index.pl?Action=AdminSupportDataCollector, it tells me 3717.59375MB is "too much swap" and that it shouldn't be using more than 200MB. The system has 32GB memory and 20GB swap, so the "should" limit is at 1% and it's currently using some 18% of swap. Free memory is zero or thereabout, as it should be and buffers/cache is 10G.

root@otrs02:~# free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 31Gi 20Gi 513Mi 1.0Mi 10Gi 10Gi
Swap: 19Gi 3.6Gi 16Gi

So why worry about the swap use? If it hadn't used that swap, it'd be less memory for buffers and cache. I could set vm.swappiness=1 to avoid this, but in my experience, this'll only lead to a less performant system.

So - any idea where this 1%-of-swap-is-ok-rule came from?
