I want to become a developer, is this the right place?

Post by ahunt36 »

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place. I have extensive commercial experience from supporting and implementing service management systems. The past year or so, I have learned the basics of Perl and I know a fair bit about troubleshooting of Perl code.

Is there a way that I could get started with some real coding challenges through the OTRS community? And would I be able to contribute and get some mentoring? How do I get started?

Regards
Alex

Hi Alex,

there exist several challenges for voluntary developers if this is your goal.

If you are looking on the contrary for paid OTRS jobs the developer forum is not the right place, but you can use use the OTRS Marketplace forum. You can also look at some companies dealing with OTRS and there also exist websites for Perl jobs in general.

In either case we can maybe help you.

Some details that would be helpful are your type of help (volutary or paid), your location (country and perhaps city), your OTRS experience (do you allready work with OTRS ? which version ?), your Javascript experience (often needed for the GUI), your SQL experience and or course your interests (which parts of OTRS would interest you most technically ?).

If you don't want to post this publicly you can also contact me directly via my forum profile or via the OTRS Community Board (http://forums.otrs.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9292). Please give me 1 - 14 days for responses, since I have to do all the work in my free time and I get several requests per day. I read them all on the same day, so urgent messages are replied early. Of course you don't have to answer all these questions, it's just to help you and us better.

For voluntary developers (and helpers in general) I recommend some optional words about the motivation. This helps us to shape the community in that way, that helpers keep their motivation. For example I help because I need OTRS for my work, to get additional experience for my CV and for the fun.

No, I regret. Usally the slides are made for german workshops, since the german community is one of the most active ones. Of course we would like to have english slides as well, but we have too little time. AFAIK there exist no developer videos.

But the linked main development documentation is in english of course and is often sufficient. Are you looking for a sepcial information or just for a genrel introduction?
