Where to start learning OTRS development

I want to do some changes to OTRS on code level. Add some options, do some time counting changes etc. But i am clueless at this moment. I dont know from where to start with, how to setup a development environment, and most importantly how to read and understand the existing code. The cod ewhich i have downloaded is looking like chinese to me, cant even understand what is happening. Please guide me anyone? any development tutorials? any guidelines? any coaching?

But you should have:
- PERL knowledge
- CSS knowledge
- Javascript knowledge
- HTML Knowledge

Also you should be able to setup webservers, maintain databases etc

well i have started learning PEARL and i know the rest of the three. But these DOCS are not helping me much. Suppose i want to add another column tickets information on dashboard. I can add it in settings, but its for me only.i want to add it to be automatically added to existing and new customers by default. Now How to figure out which portion of the code i need to change... Because the existing code is just too difficult for me to understand.

Ask a question in the Help forums, maybe someone can point you ... I realize this is a development forum, but it's assumed that you know what you're doing regarding programming and need help getting over a specific hurdle.
