Is it possible to install otrs itsm 2.1.1 on Otrs 3.0.1?
And if so how to do this?

no. There will be an ITSM Version for OTRS 3.0 in March

I was afraid of that, I will then wait for it and hopefully I can upgrade my 2.4.9 + itms to a newer version.

And of course you're invited to test the ITSM 3.0 beta packages when they become available in January 2011!

the final ITSM 3.0 will be mostly (perhaps some smaller changes in functionallity) porting of the GUI

Doh!!! I should have researched some more before I installed the latest and greatest....

I don't know a whole lot about ITSM but there is a free version of it just like OTRS correct?

OTRS and it's modules are always free. There is no commercial version of OTRS

There is no beta of OTRS ITSM 3.0 yet. Database structures are part of the different packages.
