I assume yes - you will have to install OTRS from the .tar.gz package then I think rather using the rpm package

Ubuntu is definitely fine. There are instructions floating around here ... somewhere, to make certain you've apt-get everything you need with OTRS.
OTRS 6.0.x (private/testing/public) on Linux with MySQL database.
