I have downloaded 3.1 but have not installed it yet. Here's what I am looking for:
-we are an IT support company and we would like for our customers to log a ticket when they need support. Here's our thought, any of our customers would goto a website/portal http(s)://domain.com/tickets, login and enter their company, contact person, phone number, address, email address and problem. The ticket system would send someone at our company an email saying there is a new ticket and send an email to the customer with a ticket id of some type.
-one of our tech people can login to the ticket system and assign the ticket to themself or another tech
-they can print the ticket and add their problem resolution to the ticket in the ticket system.
-when the tech closes the ticket the customer will be sent an email that the ticket is closed
Can OTRS do this or should I look elsewhere?

Re: New user questions
That's exactly what this does.
OTRS 6.0.x (private/testing/public) on Linux with MySQL database.
