Advantages of multiple classes?

Hello, please forgive my questions if they seem stupid but I know nothing of databases.

What is the advantage of using multiple classes other than easily categorizing a group of similar products? For our business, we can use 1 class or multiple classes.
Does having multiple classes affect the db search speed? For example if I had two classes, and search in 1 class, is it faster than searching for an item with one big class?

Also how does this affect the Statistics module? Again if I am reporting on 1 of multiple classes or reporting from 1 big class?

Finally, do I have the same amount of space in a db, whether I have 1 big class or break it up into multiple classes?

For example, we have:
5 product types
Is it better to have 5 classes for each type or have a single class in CMBD? The data fields in each type can be the same.
