How do I edit the Status view

Hi, as a newbie I'm looking for some help to edit the status view to add some fields like Responsible and freetext fields.
I have read though the forums and found snippets on some code changes which may be above my skillset.
I have also read about creating Dashlets but again still not seen an end to end tutorial
