I have successfully installed OTRS 3.0.8 on fedora core 14, but sometimes error show like this
"
The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application."
any idea ,, please help me....

I think the error message was generated from OTRS, maybe it was cased by your host OS.

any results from this? we are facing this issue quite a lot now.
Migrated to 3.1.3.
Also to centos vmhost on vmserver, but both guest as server systems do not show system bottlenecks.
Issue with the mail server/service perhaps?

Oke, got our solution.
Two DNS servers were configured of which one (of our hosting partner) was not available.
The mail gateway was configured in FQDN not in IP, tus relying on rapid working resolving.
Checking mail server and email addresses makes use of mail server and this was delayed. Strongly.
DNS servers configuration updated and all works faster and without timeouts.
